A celebration of the Andalusian landscape through watercolor
Next Sunday, May 3, 2026, Guadix becomes an art stage with the opening of «Water and Earth» (Agua y Tierra), a collective exhibition by the Watercolorists of Jaén and Granada, two of the provincial groups that make up the renowned Association of Watercolorists of Andalusia. The opening ceremony will take place at 8:00 PM at the Guil Cultural Contemporáneo space, located at Plaza de Pachecos, 3 in Guadix.
The exhibition can be visited from May 3 to 15 in the evening, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, a time slot designed so that residents and visitors can enjoy art at the end of the day, when the afternoon light bathes the corners of Guadix with special warmth. Admission is free.
«Water and Earth» is not just a poetic title: it is a declaration of artistic intent. The works gathered in this exhibition explore the deep relationship between the landscape, matter, and the natural environment, highlighting a technique marked by sensitivity, transparency, and connection with nature.
The participating artists—hailing from Jaén and Granada—present works ranging from rural and mountain landscapes to more abstract compositions that play with the physical properties of water on paper.
«Watercolor is, perhaps, the pictorial technique that best captures the fleetingness of nature: the moment when water and pigment meet is never repeated.»
What makes watercolor special as a technique?
Watercolor is one of the most demanding and at the same time most exciting pictorial disciplines. Unlike oil or acrylic, watercolor does not allow for easy corrections: every brushstroke is almost final, every dilution in water transforms the pigment into something alive, in constant movement. This characteristic turns each work into a dialogue between the artist’s intention and the medium’s own will.
In «Water and Earth», the watercolorists from Jaén and Granada demonstrate their mastery of this technique through works that portray Andalusian landscapes with a contemporary sensitivity, without renouncing the tradition of a way of painting rooted in plein air painting and naturalistic illustration.
Transparency and light
Watercolor works with the light of the paper itself, creating luminosities that no other technique can reproduce.
Connection with nature
The Andalusian landscape, the protagonist of the exhibition, is captured in its most authentic and emotional essence.
Collective art
A plural look at the territory, built from the collaboration between artists from different Andalusian provinces.
The Association of Watercolorists of Andalusia: four decades of art and landscape
The Association of Watercolorists of Andalusia was born in the 1980s with a clear objective: to make watercolor an artistic benchmark in southern Spain. Four decades later, the group has established itself as one of the most active and long-lasting collective projects in the visual arts in the Andalusian community.
Its work revolves around three fundamental axes: the dissemination of watercolor as an artistic technique, the promotion of meetings and exhibitions in all Andalusian provinces, and the encouragement of a spirit of collaboration and artistic exchange that transcends provincial borders.
This operating model has made it possible for artists from Almería, Cádiz, Córdoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaén, Málaga, and Seville to work together and mutually enrich each other. Throughout its more than forty years of history, the association has organized dozens of collective and individual exhibitions, courses, workshops, and gatherings that have contributed to training generations of artists and creating a true community of watercolor lovers throughout the region.
The exhibition «Water and Earth» is a perfect example of this philosophy: artists from Jaén and Granada share an exhibition space in Guadix to offer a joint—and at the same time diverse—vision of the Andalusian landscape. Each artist brings their own perspective and sensitivity, but they all share the universal language of watercolor.
The opening: art, music, and an original artwork raffle
The opening ceremony on Sunday, May 3 at 8:00 PM promises to be much more than a simple exhibition opening. The evening combines artistic contemplation with two special elements that will make this night a memorable moment.
The opening will feature a performance by the Municipal Group of Choirs and Dances of Baza, one of the most beloved and representative folk groups in the region. Their presence adds a sonic and festive dimension that turns the opening into a true cultural event where visual arts and Andalusian folklore converge.
During the opening ceremony, there will be a raffle for the original artwork «Mina». A unique opportunity to take home an authentic watercolor piece straight from the exhibition. Don’t miss the night of May 3!
Guadix: the perfect setting for art
Guadix, with its rich historical heritage and its unique landscape of caves and mountains, is an ideal setting to host this exhibition. The city of caves, capital of the Guadix-Baza region, has a long tradition of cultural hospitality, and the Guil Cultural Contemporáneo space has become in recent years one of its main reference points for the visual arts in the province of Granada.
If you visit Guadix to see the exhibition, we also recommend discovering the Cave Neighborhood (Barrio de Cuevas), the Guadix Cathedral, and the Alcazaba, three of the great heritage attractions of this unique city. At Quo Wadis Tours we offer guided tours that will allow you to learn in depth about the history, art, and culture of Guadix and its region.
