Face Retama is the fifth event in the Pasea Guadix 2026 cycle, a guided tour of the Sanctuary of San Torcuato, one of the most unique and historically significant sites in the entire Accitan diocese. A day of heritage, religious history, and landscape taking place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 09:30 AM, departing from Mariana Pineda Avenue in Guadix. Spaces are limited, and prior reservation on Giglon is essential.

What is Face Retama?

Face Retama is a site of pilgrimage and spiritual retreat that condenses centuries of religious and architectural history of Guadix and its territory. The complex includes the hermitage dedicated to San Torcuato—one of the seven “Apostolic Men” who, according to tradition, evangelized Hispania—and a historic guesthouse linked to the reception of pilgrims and devotees throughout the centuries.

The enclave also serves as a privileged natural viewpoint: its landscape surroundings are of singular beauty, where religious architecture and the territory merge into an image that synthesizes centuries of life in Guadix. A visit to Face Retama is, simultaneously, a study of historical heritage, popular devotion, and the landscape of Guadix.

“Face Retama is a place of pilgrimage and spiritual retreat that condenses centuries of religious and architectural history of Guadix and its territory.”

The Guide: Manuel Amezcua Morillas, PhD in Theology

The visit will be led by Manuel Amezcua Morillas, PhD in Theology and a renowned specialist in the religious and cultural history of the Guadix region. His deep knowledge of the territory guarantees a rigorous and fascinating approach to this unique site.

Throughout the tour, Amezcua Morillas will explain the origin of the cult of San Torcuato, the evolution of the site’s religious tradition, the role of Face Retama as a pilgrimage destination, and the various construction stages of the complex. A day where scholarship is experienced on the ground.

The Itinerary: Hermitage, Guesthouse, and Landscape

The tour has been designed to offer a complete vision of the Face Retama heritage site, covering its architectural, historical, cultural, and landscape dimensions:

Hermitage of San Torcuato
The oldest sacred space in the complex. Exploring its architecture, decorative elements, and the popular devotion that has surrounded it for centuries.

🏛

The Guesthouse
A historic building linked to the hosting of pilgrims and devotees. Its construction stages and its role in the life of the sanctuary throughout the ages.

🌿

Landscape Value
The complex is immersed in a territory of great natural beauty. The relationship between the sanctuary and the surrounding landscape is an essential part of the visit.

🙏

Place of Pilgrimage and Retreat
The ongoing role of Face Retama as a destination for devotion and reflection, with a tradition that remains uninterrupted to this day.

Pasea Guadix: Heritage for the People

The Pasea Guadix program was created as an educational tool to connect the historical, social, and cultural heritage of Guadix with its residents and visitors. Throughout its editions, it has explored corners and chapters of local history that often remain unknown to the general public, becoming an essential event for those wishing to know the city and its territory in depth.

This fifth event of the 2026 cycle continues the path set by previous editions: academic rigor, expert guides, meaningful spaces, and a methodology that combines on-site explanations with the direct experience of heritage. The program is supported by the Department of Culture of the Guadix City Council, the Provincial Council of Granada, and the Pedro Suárez Research Centre.
