Learning to ‘read’ architecture makes all the difference when interpreting heritage. I’d like to share a fascinating detail about the Dar al-Horra Palace that I learnt thanks to Home – GranadaSingular.

If you look up at its ceiling, you’ll see that in #Mudejar art, nothing is left to chance. The number 8 dominates the ceiling and conceals a profound meaning:

🔹A Celestial Bridge: It arises from four corners (the square, an earthly symbol) and transforms into an octagon (8 sides). It represents the passage from the earthly to the spiritual world; the connection with the divine.

🔹 The Divine Throne: Islamic tradition tells us that 8 angels hold up the Throne of God. By incorporating 8-pointed stars, the masters evoked that sacred presence.

🔹Regeneration and Paradise: Whilst the number 7 marks cycles of creation, the number 8 represents a new beginning, eternal life and Paradise, which has 8 gates.

🔹The Franciscan Cord: Do not overlook the wooden loop at the edge. It is the ‘Franciscan cord’ that mimics the friars’ cincture. A testament to coexistence where Andalusian geometry embraced Christian symbols.

But the symbolism isn’t limited to the ceiling. Take a look at this marble column in Dar al-Horra… What do you see? If you’re curious to learn the secret behind that “snake” and explore Granada in such depth, I encourage you to contact Home – GranadaSingular
