Whilst out walking today, I came across a poem by Abu Asbag Ibn Arqam:
“A green banner
that has made the white dawn its sash,
spreads a wing of delight over you,
may it ensure your happiness
by granting you a triumphant spirit.”
Who was he?
Abu Asbag Ibn Arqam was a prominent Andalusian thinker, politician, diplomat and poet born in Guadix in the 11th century.
As vizier of the Taifa of Almería, he is renowned for writing the oldest poem (1051) describing a green and white flag flying over the Alcazaba of Almería.
These verses are inscribed on a commemorative plaque next to the Roman Theatre, opposite the Torreón del Ferro, a work created by the Guadix School of Arts.
