 1. Did you know that Guadix is one of the oldest towns in Spain?

It was founded by the Romans under the name of Acci over 2,000 years ago. In fact, remains of the Roman theatre, recently discovered next to the Cathedral, are still preserved.

2. When is the weekly market?

The Guadix market takes place every Saturday morning in and around the fairground. It’s a great opportunity to discover local produce, fruit, clothing and the typical atmosphere of Guadix.

3. Did you know that the Guadix region has been the setting for famous films?

SYes, scenes from films such as Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Doctor Zhivago have been shot here. Its desert landscapes and unique architecture have made it a natural film set.

4. How many churches are there in Guadix?

Guadix boasts more than 15 churches and convents, including the Cathedral of La Encarnación and churches such as San Miguel, Santiago and Las Angustias, the town’s patron saint.

  2. Church of San Francisco – with an adjoining convent and a beautiful cloister.

  5. Church of San Torcuato – dedicated to the patron saint of Guadix.
  6. Church of Fátima – a modern church in the cave district.
  7. Church of Santo Domingo – of Dominican origin. Current Church of San Miguel.
  8. Church of La Magdalena – notable for its tower and interior decoration.
  9. Church of Las Angustias – home to the city’s patron saint.
  10. Church of the Virgin of Grace – right in the heart of the cave district.
  11. Church of the Conception (former Augustinian convent).
  12. Church of the Virgin of Tears – a place of devotion, very popular during Holy Week.
